Cameron Owls--Original owl sculptures in Soapstone Bronze Pewter Copper

You will just have to trust me on these copper owl pages. Because of the reflective nature of the copper owl's relief and the frame, the photos are not too good. I have never had anything so difficult to photograph in my life, and that's why I have never offered these for sale, until now. (I also found my new camera lens has a bit of distortion, so the images are not well-cropped either.) I can guarantee that the frames and mats are straight and flawless. On this page, all of the images are in 8" x 10" (20.32cm x 25.4cm) frames. There are larger-size owls on the other two pages.

THE PROCESS

In 1992, I began creating owls using sheet copper with a technique commonly called "copper tooling," and more properly called "copper repoussé." I have found this to be most relaxing. All of my designs are spontaneous with just a rough sketch penciled onto the copper. Using various hand tools, pressure is applied to both the front and back sides of the copper to depress or raise the design. The piece is then oxidized with acid and scrubbed, so the oxidation remains only in the detail. A light coating of clear, acrylic spray is applied to prevent further oxidation. Each owl is appropriately matted and framed behind glass.

All frames are a rich copper tone and about 1" deep. Outer mats are a warm or light beige; inner mats vary in color. Prices vary depending upon time involved and the size. Some owls have a rich brown acrylic paint applied to their background and it is so noted. Current sizes are: 8 x 10 inches, 9 x 11 inches, and 11 x 14 inches.
