The photographs below and on the other two Soapstone pages represent several of my owls currently for sale. Many of my owls are freestanding. Those on bases are pinned and epoxy glued to the base for added durability. I should have all of the owls not marked "SOLD," but once in a while, I forget to mark one. Watch this site for periodic updates. And remember, these are all one-of-a-kind, so don't expect, look for, or want to order a duplicate. The  label next to an owl reflects the fact that the owl is new to the Web site. It is usually a new carving, too, but not necessarily. LAYAWAYS are possible. E-mail me for terms.

NOTE: If you have any large pieces, 20 pounds or more, of Montana dendritic soapstone, I will pay top price.

BASKING IN REFLECTED GLORY

I am quite certain this is Chinese, translucent soapstone. It doesn't carve quite as nicely as the dendritic but it does have its own qualitites. There are numerous fracture lines and some color variation, but I am quite happy with how this came out of the stone.

The owl is 9.5" high x 6.5 " wide x 4.75 " deep. It is sitting on a 2" thick piece of walnut that is 6" square. The name just came to me and you will have to look it up to find its meaning, yourself.

SOAPSTONE #1F

This is a pretty hefty piece of dendritic soapstone and the owl, literally, just popped out of the stone. The dendrites are subtle, and only two sides are carved. There is an interesting color change on its left side and it appears that there is more iron in the mix.

The owl is 4.75" high, 6" wide, and 3.5" deep. It is on a natural walnut base that is 5" wide x 3.5" deep x 2" high.

Tall and asymmetrical, this owl still has a lot of character. You could hardly ask for a nicer example of Montana dendritic soapstone. It is carved on three sides with a smooth back.

Check out the larger photos. The owl stands 5.5" high, it is 3.25" wide and 1.75" deep. It is mounted on a natural walnut base that is 4" x 3" x 1.5" high.

Manganese is seen throughout this little owl but there are no true dendrites. It is a very soft green with the manganese pattern and it has a little hole though its eye.

The owl stands about 3" high, 1.5" wide, and not quite 1" deep. It stands on a walnut base that is 2" wide, 2" deep, and 1" high.

The owl is absolutely stunning. Every time I unwrap one of your owls I get the same feeling I have since buying my first one from you. The detail and beauty just makes me so appreciative of your talent that allows me to enjoy my love of the best raptor of all. Now, before I get too maudlin and it goes to your head, I'll just say thank you for my latest owl, dear Clarence, and for being my Owlman.

The pose of this owl intrigued me, and I hope it gives you a whole new slant on life. Excuse my puns, throughout. It is slightly carved on the two sides but the back is smooth. There are nicer dendrites on the back, but the entire owl has an interesting mish-mash of color..

The owl is 3.75" high, 2.25" wide, and 1.5" deep. It is mounted on a cherry base.

This owl is a recent favorite of mine, as she has a lot of character. I seldom give my opinion on my work as each of us sees an owl, differently. The photo may not show it, and the fact that I am a little colorblind may fool me, but I see a little mauve in this piece, also caused by the manganese. It is only carved on the front.

This owl is about 3.5" high, 4" wide and 4" deep. It sits on a walnut base, 4" x 3" x 1.5" high.

The soapstone coloration is especially nice in this piece, and the owl definitely has some attitude. Perhaps I would call it "haughty." The back is smooth and polished.

The bird is approximately 4" high, 2.75" wide, and 3.25" deep. It is mounted on a dark-stained base that is 2.75" x 3" x 1 .75" high.

This is another, more abstract piece. As I have said, the stone just dictates what I am to carve and it does offer some variety in my carvings. The larger photos show it off much better.

The owl is a little over 4.25" high, 4" wide and 3.25" deep. It sits on a dark-stained walnut base that is 4" x 3" x 2" high.

This is a piece of soapstone from Oregon It does not have the same density as the dendritic stone, so there is not a lot of detail carved. It is carved all the way around and the larger photos show its specks much better.

From a very nice piece of Montana  dendritic soapstone, this owl barely found a place to roost. The sculpture sort of "overflows" the base, as the larger photos illustrate. The owl is about 2.25" high and 4" long and 3" deep. It sits on a cherry base, 3" x 2" x 2 " high, and peers out from behind a wing.

Wow! Forget the owl, even though it is quite distinctive. The soapstone is gorgeous! This is dendritic soapstone with very little of its almost white showing. Instead, it has a few dendrites, swirls of manganese, as well as iron. Check out the larger images. The owl does seems quite intent on striking a likable pose. Perhaps it is the unusual amount of iron that sets it off.iving it a slight golden appearance to the dendritic  soapstone. (The golden color is not quit as pronounced as shown in the photos) There is some carving on three of its sides.

The owl is 3.25" high, 2.25" wide, and ±3" deep. The cherry base is 2.25" square x 1" high.

A signature piece from 1998, I thought this owl escaped me a long time ago. It has one eye hidden behind its wing and its head to the ground, as though listening to something, or for, something. It is carved all around and stands 1.75 " high, 4+" wide, and 1.75" deep.

Hi, Clarence,

I received my most beautiful owl & the extras yesterday. I love how he fits in my hand. He has a charm about him………a somewhat shy & gentle spirit………..a watcher if you will. I’m excited to gift him to my partner.
I hope one day we would meet face to face.
Thank you so much,

Mary

The owl remains a bit mystical with that large wing over one eye. He has a rather quizzical look but, at the same time, a "don't mess with me" attitude. Nice dendrites and subtle coloring make him a charmer. He is 3" high, 3.5" wide and 2.75" deep.

The base is oak and 3" square and 2" high. He definitely has attitude and is carved all the way around.

OOOooooo! This semi-abstract barn owl sits so nicely on this block of wood. There is very little evidence of the dendritic pattern, caused by manganese. Instead, the manganese is swirled throughout the piece, as the larger photos show. It is carved all the way around.

I am not certain what this owl is trying to say with its strange posture. It did choose to express itself, and all I did was reveal it in the stone. The manganese spread out on this piece rather than forming the distinctive dendrites. The owl is 4" high and is carved all around, but without a lot of detail. It is mounted on a 2.5" square x 1.25" dark-stained mahogany base.

A piece of dendritic soapstone that is, as the ladies call it, "mauve." I only see pink, but it is a more subtle shade than the photos show. Geologists have told me that this "pink" is also caused by the manganese that forms the dendrites. There are, however, some pronounced dendrites here and there on the piece. The largest piece of this color was my 1995 Birds in Art owl, Impression on a Winter's Eve. The owl is 2" high, 2.25" wide and 1" deep.
